Rare Racing Collectibles Featured in Gooding & Co. Geared Online Auction, Oct. 4-15

Gooding & Company’s Geared Online Auction opens today, October 4, and will run for 12 days, to Friday, Oct. 15. With a large selection of items offered without reserve, this auction offers a slice of automotive history for collectors at every level.

A Bell Star XF-GP twin window helmet worn by 2020 Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee, Jacky Ickx (Estimate: $25,000-$45,000). The rare “Twin Window” Bell helmet was developed in the mid-1970s, and this example features both its 1975 Snell and its SHCA Certified Approved stickers. The consignor believes that Ickx wore this helmet at the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he drove a Porsche 936 to a second place finish for the Martini-sponsored works team. The Belgian also wore this helmet during the 1978 Formula 1 season, during which he participated in four races (Monaco, Belgian, Spanish and Swedish Grand Prix) for Team Tissot Ensign.

The helmet presents in good original condition, complete with its visor and 1978-dated RAC approval sticker. Included with the sale is a period Bell Helmets bag, Martini patches, signed photos, and correspondence.

The Legends of Motorsport—Driver’s Edition by Dave Friedman, a rare, long out-of-print book chronicling the golden years of motor racing, published in 1992 by a private US-based collector in a limited series. (Estimate: $2,000-$4,000).

This rare Driver’s Edition is in pristine condition and features 22 original signatures from some of the world’s most famous drivers, including Chris Amon, Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, David Hobbs, Denis Hulme, Jacky Ickx, Innes Ireland, Parnelli Jones, Stirling Moss, Brian Redman, Jody Scheckter, Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, and Roger Ward. The table of contents lists forewords by Dan Gurney, Eoin Young, John Surtees, and Nigel Roebuck. The 336-page book measures 11.25 in. x 8.75 in. x 1.25 in.

Giuesppe Ratti “Protector” racing goggles with aluminum case, autographed by Phil Hill (Estimate: $1,000-$2,000). This pair of original Giuseppe Ratti goggles with smoked lenses was made in Italy, c. 1950s. Of very high quality, these were favored by many elite racing drivers including Phil Hill, who famously wore the same style throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. Hill has signed both the carrying case and strap are signed by Phil Hill.
