Phoenix, AZ -- For the second year in a row, a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider has set the record price paid for a car at the Arizona collector car auctions. Friday night at a packed Arizona Biltmore ballroom, RM Auctions sold the red droptop for $8.8 million, including buyer's premium. That topped last year's $8.25 million sale at Gooding & Co. of a blue Cal Spider.

At the midway point, the AZ auctions take is up 16% over last year's total through Friday night with $152.2 million in the till. However, this year RM added a Thursday night auction taking in $17.1 million, so comparisons vs. last year may be somewhat overstated. With that factored out, sales are up 3% over 2013 to date.

Gooding and Silver auctions conclude today, with Barrett-Jackson and Russo and Steele sales running through Sunday.

Watch for updates and final tallies early next week from Vintage Motorsport.
